Saints Women Finish Third in the League

By Saints Water Polo, Feb 11 2018 09:26AM

Saints Women finished in 3rd place in the Northern Premier League and cemented their place as one of the best teams in the U.K.

This follows home and away wins against Newcastle and Nottingham, the later by over 30 goals in both matches. One of the standout results of the season was the draw away against Edinburgh. This was the first time St Andrews have taken points off Edinburgh in five years, showing that a win soon is extremely possible. Saints also lost by just one goal against reigning league and BUCS champions, Durham, showing that we can play to that standard and have a chance at winning every match.

Our attention now turns to the BUCS Championship. This is a knockout competition combining both the Northern and Southern Premier Leagues. Our first match is against Cardiff on the 21st February. If we win, we play Bristol in the Quarter Finals, win that and we will most likely face Durham in the Semi-Finals. The Final is then part of BUCS Big Wednesday in Nottingham, having been last year, we know this is an incredible thing to be part of and our aim is to make it there again.

What I think is most impressive about this team is the vast improvements made every single year. Just four years ago, the women could barely get seven players together, two years ago; they were competing in Scottish 1A, even last year they were getting beaten by over 20 goals against the best teams in the Premier League. But this year they have taken points off of those teams and have given every team a proper game. Every single match against any team in the country is now winnable. We have a squad who are all completely committed to the team; to improving their own game and helping others improve theirs. We are all learning from each other and everyone is so vital to the team in different ways. From being able to learn from those with international water polo experience but also being able to learn from those who are extremely committed, to be able to learn how hard work pays off and how important the organizational side of the club is as well, be this publicity in attracting new recruits or organizing all our transport.

If we carry on improving at this rate it will be extremely exciting to see what the rest of the season and next year shall bring!
